Canada Shifts Diplomatic Missions from India to Singapore and Malaysia: Report

TORONTO: After issuing an ultimatum to reduce the number of diplomatic missions in India, Canada has shifted diplomatic missions to other countries. India had demanded that the number of Canadian diplomatic representatives in India be reduced by October 10. After this, diplomatic officers are transferred to Singapore and Malaysia.

After the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the diplomatic relations between India and Canada were strained. India also stopped issuing visas to Canadians from September 18. It was after this that an instruction was given to reduce the number of diplomatic representatives in India.

The Financial Times had reported that India had asked Canada to recall 41 diplomatic representatives from Delhi before October 10. The report also stated that India would no longer have diplomatic protection for Canadian officials after this deadline.

Canada currently has 62 diplomatic missions in India. India demanded a reduction in the number of officers, citing the need for parity between the two countries in terms of the number and status of diplomatic representatives.

Canada has demanded that Indian officials be interrogated over the killing of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who is on India’s terror list. Canada raised this demand during unofficial talks with India. Meanwhile, India is of the position that it will not accept an investigation without any evidence. India points out that Canada has not handed over any kind of evidence in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
