MADRID, 15 (PRESS EUROPE)
The government of Canada indicated on Wednesday that it will revoke a sanctions waiver that allowed the turbines of Nord Stream 1 in Montreal to be repaired.
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced the decision, criticizing the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who they accuse of never wanting Nordstream to return to full operation.
“As Putin was forced to demonstrate that his intention was never to restore Nordstream 1 to full operation and that the pipeline itself was rendered unusable, the Government of Canada has decided to lift the waiver of timed sanctions limited amount that had been granted to enable the return to Germany of turbines that were under repair at the Siemens plant in Montreal,” read a joint statement.
Canadian authorities have criticized that Moscow “has tried to sow this division (in the West) by claiming a turbine was needed for repair”, while trying to blame Canada for curtailing natural gas exports.
“This summer, the Russian regime and its propaganda arm attempted to exploit the instability they had created with their illegal invasion of Ukraine to justify further destabilization of European energy security,” Joly and Wilkinson accused.
“By doing so, President Putin hoped to sow division among the allies, who had shown and continue to show unprecedented unity in support of Ukraine,” they added.
