Canada’s first lady returned from London with flu-like symptoms and underwent tests.
“Sophie Gregoire Trudeau did tests today for Covid-19. And the result was positive,” said the prime minister’s office.
Earlier, the prime minister released the information that he intended to work from home in the coming days.
“Although he does not feel any symptoms, the Prime Minister chose to work from home in self-isolation as a precaution until the results (of his wife) are known,” said a statement issued hours before the announcement of the spread of Sophie Trudeau.
The prime minister plans to meet by telephone “with international leaders” and canceled a meeting scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Ottawa with the prime ministers of Canada’s provinces and territories.
Canada’s president and deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland, will talk by phone with provincial leaders to “consider collective action to limit the spread of Covid-19 and protect Canadians,” according to the statement.
The coronavirus has infected more than 150 people in Canada and has caused a death since the pandemic began in December in China.
Strict measures in Quebec
With 13 cases in the territory, the Quebec government has announced a series of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the province, in particular by asking travelers returning from abroad to be isolated for two weeks.
The provincial government has also banned closed meetings with more than 250 people and has asked the population to work from home whenever possible.
