In Canada there are fears of a rush at the border with the USA. Donald Trump had announced that he would deport migrants en masse.

People in Canada are nervous after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election. The Canadian authorities say they are “on high alert.” The reason: possible illegal entry of migrants. “We are on high alert,” Canadian police spokesman Charles Poirier told AFP on Friday. “All our eyes are on the border (…) because we know that Trump’s stance on immigration could increase illegal and irregular migration to Canada.”

Trump promised during the election campaign that he wanted to ensure the largest mass deportation in US history. He accused migrants of “poisoning the blood of our country.” Most migrants in the USA come from Mexico and South America. However, many could flee to neighboring Canada to avoid deportation. The two countries are separated by a border more than 8,000 kilometers long. This runs largely through forests and rivers.

In Ottawa on Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland met with a group of ministers looking at challenges that could arise between Canada and the United States as a result of the incoming Trump administration. She assured that Canada is prepared for a possible surge in migrant arrivals. “We have a plan,” Freeland said at a press conference after the meeting. “Canadians need to know that our borders are secure and that we control them.”
