Canada increases import taxes on Chinese electric cars to 100 (!) percent

“Players like China are giving themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace, jeopardizing the stability of our Canadian industry and putting hard-working auto and metal workers on the streets. We take steps to address that.”

With these words, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces new import tariffs on Chinese products. This includes 100 percent tariffs on Chinese electric cars, such as those from BYD, Geely and SAIC.

Additional taxes will also be levied on Tesla cars made at the Gigafactory in Shanghai. Some hybrid cars will also come under the new measure.
