Noah Dobson scored with a precise shot off the glove side of Cayden Primeau. Then Logan Mailloux missed the target on the Canadian backup.
The Canadians had lost their previous two games, and the players and head coach Martin St-Louis talked about the lack of maturity in the team’s play. Aside from several layups, including a different one in their zone in the second period, and a lack of control, the Habs players made better decisions on the ice and played a good game against the Islanders.
The award, however, was only a small point in the ratings.
Cole Caufield, twice, and Mailloux, with his first goal in the National Hockey League (NHL), scored for Canada (2-3-1). Juraj Slafkovsky had two assists and Primeau stopped 33 shots in his second start of the season.
Bo Horvat, Kyle Palmieri and Anders Lee scored in regulation time for the Islanders (2-1-2). Dobson had two assists and Semyon Varlamov made 21 saves.
Mailloux and Jayden Struble played their first game with Canada last season. Mailloux was recalled from the Laval Rocket on Friday, while Struble missed the first five games of the campaign with an upper body injury.
Defenders Arber Xhekaj and Kaiden Guhle (upper body) were left out.
Slafkovsky and defenseman Mike Matheson had their careers after being questionable issues.
The Islanders lost forward Anthony Duclair in the third period. He appeared to have injured his right leg when he lost his balance and fell on the ice.
The Canadiens play their next game on Tuesday, when they host the New York Rangers at the Bell Centre.
Better effort
The Islanders dominated the game in the first period, but the Canadians still had a few chances.
Varlamov stood out against Joel Armia, alone in front. For his part, Jake Evans missed the target in a two-on-one attack.
Slafkovsky also missed two good scoring opportunities after shots from Lane Hutson.
The Islanders finally opened the scoring on the power play with 5:28 left in the first period. Horvat beat Primeau with a one-timer from the slot, off a short pass from Mathew Barzal.
Palmieri increased the lead with 3:02 left in the first period. A long pass from Dobson got him behind Struble and he beat Primeau on the wing.
Canada came alive again by scoring on the power play with 3.5 seconds left before the first break. Caufield did it twice to thwart Varlamov in the top corner with a shot from a tight angle.
Mailloux then tied the game 2-2 after just 59 seconds of play in the second period. Jake Evans joined the new defender in the slot. Mailloux hit the mark with a sharp shot from Varlamov’s glove side.
Caufield had a good chance to give Canada the lead when he escaped a few minutes later. However, Varlamov stayed frozen in front of the agile attacker and made the save with his left pad.
The Canadian found himself in bottlenecks in his territory when more than three minutes were present for the fifth on the ice – and even 3:58 for Mailloux. Dobson fired the two most dangerous shots in this grueling series, but Primeau closed the door.
Varlamov also had his say in the second period. He was alert to stop shots from Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach quickly after their return.
Primeau kept Canada in the game with some great saves in the third period, most notably against Horvat on the Islanders’ power play, then at Scott Mayfield’s expense.
He frustrated Horvat again with less than eight minutes left on the clock thanks to a good move to his left.
Primeau, however, was powerless against Lee with 4:36 left, when the Isles captain beat him with a stop after a shot by Jean-Gabriel Pageau in a two-on-two attack.
However, Caufield brought everyone back to square one with 2:10 left. His wrist shot slipped under Varlamov’s right arm and ended up behind the goal line.
The goalkeepers kept the suspense going in extra time with some good saves. Varlamov harassed Hutson, while Primeau stood as a wall during the Islanders’ power play. Dobson also hit the post for the Islanders.
Dobson finally decided to shoot.
