Canada Engages in Discussions with India Over Diplomatic Presence Amid Tensions

The Canadian government is still in discussions with India regarding its diplomatic presence in India. Canadian Foreign Minister Jolie made the announcement on the 3rd. Tensions between the two countries have intensified over the murder of a Sikh leader outside Vancouver.

Foreign Minister Jolie said Canada is in “ongoing cooperation and dialogue with India” in response to reports that the number of diplomats in India has been asked to be reduced by one-third. “There are certainly tensions between the two governments, and this is when the presence of diplomats on the ground is important,” he said. I will protect it,” he said.

The Financial Times (FT) earlier reported that India has asked 41 of the 62 Canadian diplomats stationed in the country to leave the country by the 10th. The Canadian government has an embassy in Delhi and consulates in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai.

On the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau called on the Modi government to participate in the investigation into the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, while reiterating his desire to maintain ties with India. He said there was “no intention to escalate the conflict. We remain committed to the important work of continuing our constructive relationship with India during this extremely difficult time.”
