Canada eliminated Marina Stakusic in the first round of qualifying in New York

The 19-year-old Ontario native lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to Swiss Céline Naef, 181st in the WTA rankings, in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday afternoon.

Stakusic, ranked 140th in the world, stood out two weeks ago by beating Erika Andreeva, ranked 89th in the world, in the first round of the Toronto National Bank Open.

The Canadian faced her own slump, committing at least 11 double faults. In addition, she converted only four of her 16 break points.

Later in the evening, Canada’s Rebecca Marino, 150th in the world, will be in action. She will face Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure, 929th player in the world.

Quebecer Gabriel Diallo (144th), who won his first qualifying match on Monday night, will face Frenchman Titouan Droguet (148th) in the second round on Wednesday.
