Canada does not plan to grant residency to all undocumented workers

As frustrating as this is to hear for those people who are in a precarious position of being undocumented in Canada and contributing to the economy, and perhaps for their children who are Canadian, I think we need to be very clear with Canadians and quite realistic about what can be achieved.A quote from Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration.

Despite the economic imperative, despite the very humanitarian imperative that a comprehensive regularization program represents, it is clear to me that Canadians are not ready to accept it and that is simply the reality.Miller explained.

Minister Miller said he is still actively considering provide legal status to undocumented immigrants who work in certain sectors, such as health care and construction.

In late 2021, the Liberals pledged to explore ways to regularize the status of undocumented workers who contribute to Canadian communitiesAt the time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he had no timeline for implementing the proposal.

Miller has estimated the number of undocumented people in Canada to be between 300,000 and 600,000.

The administration has been under pressure from organizations representing migrants, including the Migrant Rights Network, which in May urged Miller to move forward with the administration’s proposal.

The issue of immigration in general has become an important topic in the political debate in the country, particularly due to the amalgamation made between immigration and housing affordability, encouraged by conservative and right-wing parties and organizations in Canada.

A Leger poll conducted in July found that 60 per cent of respondents believe there are too many immigrants coming to Canada.

Miller announced in March that Ottawa would seek to reduce the proportion of temporary residents in the general population from 6.2 per cent to five per cent by 2027.

I think we have to be pretty practical and realistic about whether we can accomplish this in a way that shows Canadians that we are capable of doing it next year.said.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said in a news release earlier this month that the department will include measures to address the influx of temporary residents in its next immigration tiering plan.

The plan for setting tiers is being expanded to include both temporary and permanent residents. It will be presented in the fall, following consultations with provincial and territorial counterparts and others, as part of Canada’s annual immigration tiering planning.the statement said.
