Canada denies unemployment benefits to those who refuse to be vaccinated

The Liberals have decided to abolish employment insurance, the equivalent of unemployment insurance in France, for the unvaccinated who can no longer work because of this decision.

Canada is cracking down on its citizens who have lost their jobs because they refuse to be vaccinated. Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough has announced that the unvaccinated will be denied unemployment benefits as long as public health concerns remain at the forefront. The rule will not apply for those who cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons, reports Radio Canada.

“As long as the collective public health of Canadians is threatened and our economy is threatened, we will need to keep public health policy at the top of our decisions in the areas of jobs, labor and the economy.” , Carla Qualtrough said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

Encourage vaccination

The Liberals, the ruling party, say federal support should not go to workers who lose their jobs or work hours because they refuse to be vaccinated.

With this decision, the government intends to encourage Canadians to be vaccinated and thus limit contamination and prevent the closure of workplaces. The minister indicated that she did not know how long this rule would apply.

At the start of the crisis, the unemployment rate exploded in Canada, reaching an all-time high of 13.7% in May 2020. Several aids exist for citizens who cannot work. The government pays them, for example, a benefit of $ 300 per week for workers in confined areas. Besides, employment insurance still exists, but now, the unvaccinated will be deprived of it.
