Canada crush Italy 6-1 in Pool A

Defending champion Canada picked up its second success in two outings in the 2022 world championship.

The Maple Leaf players, who beat Germany 5-3 on Friday, edged Italy 6-1 early Sunday afternoon in Pool A.

This meeting did not start in an ideal way for Canada, however, surprised by an Italian counter concluded by Phil Pietroniro in the 13th minute. But the Canadians were able to equalize in the 16th and were already leading 4-1 in the 38th. Their goalkeeper Chris Driedger had to face only 12 shots on target, including 6 in the final third.

The first clash of the tournament, scheduled for Sunday in Group B, saw Sweden dominate Czechia 5-3. The Czechs opened the scoring in the 7th minute – thanks to an assist from Roman Cervenka – before conceding four goals in a row. The 4-1, registered in the 29th, also cost their place to their goalkeeper Karel Vejmelka.

One point for Austria

Coached by the Swiss duo Roger Bader / Arno del Curto, Austria also won an unexpected point on Sunday, losing only 3-2 after extra time against the United States in Group B. The Austrians, who even led 2-0 in the 35th, gave in on a success by Luke Hughes after 3’07” in “overtime”.
