Canada and Philippines Strengthen Bilateral Relations on 75th Anniversary of Diplomatic Ties

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Mélanie Joly, today welcomed the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, Enrique A. Manalo, to Ottawa on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Philippines.

During their meeting, Minister Joly and Secretary Manalo discussed the close people-to-people ties that form the basis of bilateral relations, as well as the common priorities of the two countries, such as defense and security cooperation, maritime industry , the fight against climate. change, human rights and economic stability. The ministers reaffirmed the two countries’ shared commitment to maintaining democracy, sovereignty and multilateralism, and highlighted the importance of international law, including the Convention on United Nations on the Law of the Sea.

Minister Joly provided an update on the implementation of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy since its launch in November 2022, including the expansion of Canada’s electronic passport program to include the Philippines including, the implementation of Canada’s Dark Vessel Tracking Program in the Philippines, the signing of the Canada-Philippines Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation, and the opening of the Indo-Pacific Office for agriculture and agri-food in Manila.

Secretary Manalo updated Minister Joly on important developments in the Philippines that will create new opportunities for both countries, such as the progress made by the Philippines in developing the infrastructure and manufacturing sectors, developing human capital, and strengthening the country’s capacity in maritime law. forced

The ministers reaffirmed the commitment of the two countries to work together to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, and welcomed the increased participation of the Canadian Armed Forces in multilateral exercises led by the Philippines and other partners.

Recognizing the strong and mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries, the ministers agreed to urge officials to begin discussions on strengthening bilateral relations.
