Can Your Sleeping Position Trigger Nightmares? Results of a Study Revealed

Nightmares tend to occur among people with weaker immunity, depression, stress and irritability. Also, these bad dreams are common among children. Nightmares become a serious problem if they affect the quality of sleep and arouse anxiety, so it is good to do everything we can to prevent them.

Therefore, did you know that one way to prevent it is to choose your sleeping position? In a study, carried out in 2014 and published in the journal “Sleep and Hypnosis”, 41 people who used to sleep on their right side and 22 people who used to sleep on their left side were analyzed. Participants were asked questions about the frequency of dreams, the frequency of nightmares, and the emotions they experienced in sleep.

Despite the fact that twice as many right-side sleepers were analyzed than left-side sleepers, the rate of nightmares was higher among left-side sleepers. Specifically, 40 percent of left-side sleepers said they often have nightmares, compared to 14 percent of side sleepers. So what could be the explanation?

Well, there is no scientific explanation for this phenomenon, but Theresa Cheung, the author who has written several books on dreams and spirituality, believes that sleeping on the left side can be associated with nightmares because the body puts more pressure on the heart: “ Whenever there is stress, the quality of sleep decreases, hence the nightmares,” she said, according to ‘Best Life’.

Good news is not for back sleepers either! According to the publication, this position affects breathing, implicitly the stage of REM sleep, responsible for rest: “When you sleep on your back, your brain becomes tempted to come out of REM sleep, because it turns its attention to the lack of air flow and causes the body to move”, said science teacher Rafael Pelayo.
