Can you slap children? Debate on Nonviolent Education

Violence is part of everyday life in many families. Child protection organizations complain that this is also due to the fact that violence in upbringing is still not sufficiently outlawed. Parliament should now take countermeasures – but whether it will succeed remains to be seen.

In contrast to other countries, there is still no complete ban on the use of violence in education in Switzerland.

“Physical violence has no place in raising children” – a statement that hardly anyone would openly contradict. It is repeated like a mantra in almost every political debate on domestic violence. However, the reality often looks different. In 2018, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) surveyed more than 8,000 young people aged 17 and 18. Almost two-thirds said they experienced some form of parental violence in their upbringing. Year after year, the Zurich Children’s Hospital reports an increasing number of suspected cases of child abuse. The child and adult protection authorities are observing something similar, and Corona has further aggravated the situation.
