Women with lupus are often advised not to become pregnant. This is because lupus can potentially pose a risk to the mother and the baby in her womb, Mother.

So is it true that women with lupus can’t get pregnant? Check out the full explanation below, Mom.

What is lupus?

Launching from the P2PTM page of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the presence of autoantibodies against autoantigens, the formation of immune complexes, and immune system dysregulation, which causes damage to several organs of the body. Lupus can attack one or more organ systems.

“In some people only the skin and joints are affected, but in some patients, other lupus attacks vital organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, central or peripheral nervous system,” he explained.

Meanwhile launched Mayo Clinic, Lupus is a disease that occurs when a person’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because the signs and symptoms often mimic those of other diseases.

Is it true that women with lupus can’t get pregnant?

Years ago, women with lupus or other autoimmune disorders were advised not to become pregnant. This is because lupus can be too risky for the mother and fetus.

However, this assumption is no longer true, Mother. There have been many cases of women with lupus having healthy pregnancies.

Quoted from Harvard Health Publishing, about 90 percent of people with lupus are biologically women. This disease tends to be experienced at the age of 15 to 35 years.

A woman with lupus can still get pregnant. Even so, people with this disease may take longer to get pregnant.

“It (difficulty getting pregnant) is more likely to occur when you have active disease that requires aggressive treatment or when you have certain antibodies (antiphospholipid antibodies) in the blood,” says family doctor Alison Shmerling, MD, MPH.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends people with lupus avoid pregnancy until the condition is under control or has healed for at least 6 months. Apart from maintaining their diet and taking vitamins, women with lupus who want to become pregnant also need to undergo treatment and consult with obstetricians and gynecologists, as well as other specialist doctors who are related to this disease.

Then what are the complications or dangers of pregnant women with lupus?
