Military analyst Igor Rajev, a NAF reserve colonel, explained in a special issue of TV24 whether Ukraine could hit the Crimean bridge at all.
Rajev points out that Ukraine has the potential to do so.
“At the moment, Ukraine does not have a weapon system to reach out of its territory, namely the territory they currently control, which is not occupied by Russia,” Rajev said, but noted that there were other options, such as divers, special divers, etc. how to do it.
However, he adds: “But it must be understood that this is a strategically important object for the Russians, and they are guarding him very seriously, both with physical security and with serious air defense systems.”
Rajev also notes that if NATO and the US supply new systems to Ukraine in the future, Ukraine is likely to “catch” the bridge.
“The destruction of this bridge every day would be a very important success that would help the Ukrainian army in the fight against the invader,” adds I. Rajev.
It has already been reported that Ukraine has planned to strike the Crimean bridge on May 9, Captain Jānis Slaidiņš, a representative of the National Armed Forces (NAF), said in an interview with Latvijas Radio.
Jānis Slaidiņš pointed out that in terms of armaments, Ukraine has such an opportunity and it would be a moral uplift for the country if the operation were successful. Slaidiņš said that the damage to the Crimean bridge would be a big blow to Russia, as it supplies reserves to the entire south.
The bridge was not demolished on May 9.
