The relationship between Twitter and Elon Musk can best be described as a roller coaster from the start. The billionaire said in April that he tweeted wanted to take over and got for that green light from the company. A month later paused he made the takeover and last Friday he said there definitely to refrain from.

Company filed a lawsuit to hold him to the deal. The platform says it has done everything (and more than legally required) to provide Musk with information. The billionaire did not give home at important moments, the company believes.

In fact, one of the world’s most famous social media is at the mercy of the world’s richest person. The soap raises two questions: Why did Musk backtrack from his plans to take over Twitter? And what does this mean for the company’s future?

Why does Musk want to get out of the deal?

“Twitter has huge potential, I will unlock it.” With these ambitious words, Elon Musk made his $44 billion offer three months ago. He said he had two main reasons for buying the company: there was a lot more to be said on the platform and he wanted to do something about all the fake accounts.

It is striking that precisely those fake accounts are now reason for Musk to want to get rid of the deal. He is convinced that the actual number of ‘bots’ is much higher than Twitter itself has reported for years. And Twitter would withhold important information from him. He provides no evidence for these claims. Musk now invokes an agreement whereby – in the event of a change with major consequences for business operations – he may cancel the deal. An argument that, according to lawyers who spoke to American media about this, is incorrect.

All well and good, but why such a big turn in such a short time? From the time the deal was finalized, it took just 19 days for Musk to openly doubted for the first time.

First of all, there is the stock market. Shares of Twitter and Tesla have fallen sharply. That means Musk is paying a lot of money for a company that has decreased in value since its bid. His net worth – which mainly consists of shares in Tesla – has also fallen. In other words: the economic situation has changed in such a short time that the deal is much less attractive.

In addition, there is the question of Musk’s actual intention. Did he really want to buy Twitter? It seemed that way for weeks. He went through all the steps very seriously. Still, Matt Levine, a leading financial columnist at Bloomberg, take it into account now that it was a joke to him all along. Even if it was a joke he kept for a long time.

Would an entrepreneur want to take over a company for billions as a joke? Probably not. But Musk is not your average billionaire. Even Twitter’s lawyers make this suggestion in the indictment.

What is Twitter’s future?

For Twitter, this is the most uncertain period in the company’s 16-year history. And that’s saying something. Since its inception, the company has been plagued by internal problems, changes in power and a failure to innovate and grow quickly.

When it became clear that Musk had bought shares in Twitter in early April, the unrest increased internally. And it only got bigger with each news development. An internal meeting where employees could ask Musk questions – which the billionaire ostensibly participated in via his phone – brought no improvement.

In addition, Twitter is stuck: it can now make big decisions much more difficult. Both at the product level – think of new functions – but also when it comes to heavy moderation decisions. There is also a chance that employees will not wait for the legal battle and leave and that attracting new talent is difficult.

In the lawsuit, Twitter is strong, is now the widely shared analysis. The question is how Musk’s lawyers will refute the charges. It has not yet been announced when the lawsuit will begin.

This is how the case between Elon Musk and Twitter could end:
