Suara.com – Pediatricians say routine immunizations should not be abandoned in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, including vaccines pneumonia.

Reported by ANTARA, Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Padjadjaran Prof. Dr. Cissy B. Kartasasmita said that Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PVC) to prevent children from getting pneumonia could be given in conjunction with other vaccines, especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“PCV immunization can be given at the same time as other vaccines, especially during a pandemic,” he said.

Cissy mentioned, vaccines that can be given concurrently with PCV such as diphtheria, tetanus, acellular or whole cell pertussis, Haemophilus influenza type b, inactivated poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, meningococcal serogroup C, MMR and varicella as well as tt-conjugated meningococcal polysaccharide, serogroups W and Y.

The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) recommends giving PCV immunization twice since 2020 for children aged 7-12 months with a minimum distance of one month (booster is given after the child is 12 months old with a minimum distance of 2 months from the previous dose).

In children 1-2 years, the administration is 2 times with an interval of 2 months. Then for children aged 2-5 years, PCV10 is given 2 times with a distance of 2 months and PCV13 is given 1 time.

On the other hand, the PCV vaccine was not only able to help prevent children from getting pneumonia, but also other diseases such as meningitis and inflammation of the ear.

According to Cissy, the side effects are the same as other vaccines, such as pain at the injection site, fever, fussy children, which are easily lost and do not require treatment. But even if parents want to provide treatment to overcome this effect, then it is allowed.

Pneumonia occurs due to an infection in the lung tissue so that gas exchange cannot occur. Bacteria that cause illness, one of which is inhaled pneumococci, then develops in the throat through the blood and then to other places or the lungs.
