Can the M1 Abrams Tank Shake Russia?

Jakarta

Multiple units tank M1 Abrams United States flagship, has arrived in Ukraine to assist in the counterattack on Russian-occupied territory. Called tough and world class, is the M1 Abrams capable of shaking Russia?

Quoted detikINET from Popular Mechanic, 31 Abrams tanks reportedly entered Ukraine this week, possibly transported from Poland. The tank is a version of the M1A1 Abrams, about 20 years older than the US Army’s current standard M1A2SEPv3. The US initially planned to send new tanks, but this did not happen because the production period took too long.

Even though it is outdated and lacks certain modern features, this tank is still considered tough. The US also provides special depleted uranium weapons on Abrams tanks, which are seen as effective in destroying enemy tanks.

However, even though it seems like a lot, 31 tanks are considered too few. This number is too small to make a significant contribution on the Ukrainian battlefield.

“Tanks are big machines and require heavy maintenance. A tank battalion with 31 tanks will rarely go into battle with all its units. A certain percentage will have mechanical problems, or something else that prevents them from entering the fight. Russian drones will probably detect them before the battle and damage them with ammunition from the air,” said Popular Mechanic.

A Ukrainian tank battalion might go into battle with 90% of its tank units. Even if the battle was successful, they might lose 25% of their tanks to mines and anti-tank guns.

“What used to be 31 tanks has now become 19 tanks, so the unit is unable to carry out further combat operations,” they added.

Not to mention calculating other factors such as crew rest and repairs if there is damage. Worse, Washington has not provided additional tanks to replace combat losses. This means that battered Abrams tank battalions may be out of action for some time.

In general, the US and other western countries did not provide enough tanks for Ukraine. The Abrams tank is thought to easily defeat Russian tanks, but there are too few units to make a difference.

“Abrams are good tanks and it’s good that they were sent to Ukraine. The problem is, the Biden administration only provided 31 tanks, even though it could easily provide 310 units. The Ukrainian army may be one of the best in Europe at piloting these tanks, but it doesn’t matter how big their bags are , that small unit will probably be swallowed up in this massive conflict,” concluded Popular Mechanic.
