Liberal MEP and Vice-President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Siegfried Muresan, makes fun of the Austrian Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, who posted on his Facebook account a congratulatory message on Christmas Eve according to the ancient ritual, which shows that he not understanding to differentiate the narrow category of Orthodox churches which are guided by the old (Julian) calendar, by celebrating Christmas 13 days after Christmas celebrated in the official Christian-Orthodox (Gregorian) calendar.
Siegfried Muresan immediately accused Nehammer, underlining that he is inexperienced and that before speaking he should do his research “on this subject and on any other subject”.
Nehammer wrote on his account: “I wish all Orthodox Christians a blessed and peaceful Christmas!”

Siegfried Muresan quickly highlighted his lack of skill Nehammer: “Can someone tell him that not all Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas today? A Chancellor should read up before speaking. On this subject and on any other subject,” wrote the liberal MEP on his Facebook account.
At the moment, among the Orthodox churches that use the Julian calendar are: the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Russian Church, The Serbian Church and Monasteries of St. Mount Athos, with the exception of Vatopedu.
