Can Rendang Padang Be Made From Non Halal Materials? Here are 3 explanations

Jakarta

Pork rendang offered Babiambo sparked controversy. So, shouldn’t Padang rendang be made from non-halal ingredients? This is chef Minang’s explanation.

Until now, pork rendang is still a debate. Some argue that pork rendang is not in accordance with the values and culture of the Minang people.

But not a few also think that pork rendang is fine. As mentioned by a chef from Minang who is often called Uda Dian.

According to him, the ingredients for cooking have no religion, so pork rendang is fine. However, anyone who sells should apply adab by not using Minang elements.

Such as the use of the term ‘ambo’ and a logo that resembles a rumah gadang. This is so as not to damage the stigma of Padang rice, which is known as halal food.

Actually, non-halal rendang has been made by several people long before this case. According to Uda Dian, this is not a problem.

According to him, what sparked public anger was because the restaurant used the image of a Padang restaurant. As in the naming with the Minang language and a logo that looks like a gadang house.

“You are free (to make non-halal rendang) you have the right to cook whatever you want with any ingredients,” he said.

However, it is recommended that if you want to do business with non-halal cuisine, then there is a menu of popular recipes for Padang cuisine, then use a brand that does not touch the Minang language.

“Guaranteed to be safe. For example, Mrs. Liem, there are also non-halal rendang dishes and non-halal balado wong who sell popular Minang dishes with non-halal ingredients at MarketPlace, only they don’t carry the Minang name and brand themselves with the Padang narrative,” he continued.
