Can PCV Vaccine Be Given Together With Other Vaccines?

Giving the PVC vaccine can prevent children from getting pneumonia and meningitis.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran Prof. Dr. Cissy B. Kartasasmita said that pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PVC) can be given in combination with other vaccines, especially at times pandemic Covid-19 recently. PVC is a vaccine that contains conjugated proteins to prevent children from getting pneumonia.

Cissy said there are many other vaccines that can be given at the same time as PCV. Call it diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP), Haemophilus influenza type b (HIb), day inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine (IPV) aka polio vaccine.

In addition, the hepatitis B vaccine, meningococcal serogroup C, MMR, and varicella, as well as tt-conjugated meningococcal polysaccharide serogroups A, C, W, and Y can also be administered at the same time as PVC. Since 2020, the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) has recommended that PCV be given when children are two, four, and six months old with booster at the age of 12-15 months.

If the child has not received it at the age of seven to 12 months, PCV is given twice with a minimum of one month apart. “Booster given after the child is 12 months old with a minimum distance of two months from the previous dose,” said Cissy in a health webinar, Thursday.

If the child has not also been vaccinated with PCV at the age of one to two years, the administration is given twice with an interval of two months. Then, if it has not been given to children aged two to five years, PCV10 is given twice with a distance of two months and then PCV13 is once.

On the other hand, the PCV vaccine can not only help prevent children from getting pneumonia, but also other diseases, such as meningitis and ear inflammation. Regarding side effects, according to Cissy, the same as other vaccines, namely pain at the injection site, fever, or fussy children that go away easily and do not require treatment.

But even if parents want to provide treatment to overcome this effect, then it is allowed.
