Can Papaya Leaf Extract Increase Platelet Count in Dengue Patients?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – One of the most common home remedies that people have tried and trusted to treat a drop in the platelet count in dengue patients is an extract papaya leaf.

“One of the most common symptoms of DHF that needs to be treated is a decrease in the number of platelets. Papaya, a tropical fruit rich in essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, offers many health benefits.

Its high vitamin C content helps boost the immune system, making it more resistant to dengue,” said Mohan Kumar Singh, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine. Times of India, two weeks ago.

“Papaya contains a special enzyme known as papain which has anti-inflammatory properties that can potentially reduce the severity of symptoms, aiding in speedy recovery. Papaya leaf extract contains bioactive compounds that help increase platelet production and reduce inflammation, ensuring a healthy platelet count during any infection,” explains Singh.

The clinical value of papaya leaves in platelet count is unclear

A 2019 meta-analysis of nine studies found no clear association between papaya leaf extract and platelet count. “Nine studies (India-6, Pakistan-1, Indonesia-1, Malaysia-1) met the inclusion criteria. Seven studies showed increased platelet counts in patients receiving CP extract, whereas one study showed no significant difference between the two groups. and direct comparisons were not possible in the remaining studies,” the study found.

“The clinical value of elevated platelet counts or early shedding is not clear in the absence of stronger indicators of a favorable clinical outcome. The current evidence is insufficient to comment on the role of CP extracts in dengue,” he added. Since the clinical effects of papaya leaves are unclear, it is advisable to consult a doctor before consuming it during dengue fever.
