Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Every month, menstruation often a challenge especially when mood unruly, body aches, there is even a kind of sexual urge greater than usual. If the kissing scene in the previous film did not trigger stimulation, in fact this happens the other way around during menstruation.
“People are more aroused during menstruation because of spikes in hormone levels,” said sexologist Shamrya Howard, as quoted by the Daily Mail Shape.
A 2013 study on hormones and behavior found an increase in sexual desire and arousal was due to a drop in estrogen levels early in the period, then increased over time. A surge in estrogen, the main female sex hormone, can increase sex drive and function.
This sexual urge often demands an outlet so that masturbation can be a solution. But can you masturbate while you’re on your period?
“Actually there is no problem. But you have to be careful because menstruation oozes dirty blood, not to mention the condition of the fingers [atau sex toys] not clean. It is necessary to pay attention to hygiene,” explained sexologist Haekal Anshari when contacted CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday (24/6).
On the other hand, masturbation during menstruation turns out to bring a number of benefits.
1. Reduce pain
A study by Womanizer examined masturbation and pain during menstruation. For six months, the women involved in the study were asked to swap painkillers during menstruation for masturbation. At the end of the study, as many as 70 percent of participants reported regular masturbation reduced the intensity of menstrual pain. Why is that so?
“Most people understand that increased blood flow is very beneficial for the body. In the same way, masturbation increases blood flow to the genitals and this, in itself, is very therapeutic,” explains Christopher Ryan Jones, lead author of the study and clinical psychologist.
In addition, pain decreases thanks to the release of hormones. Oxytocin acts as a relaxant that contributes to reducing cramps and headaches.
2. Accelerate the menstrual period
Orgasm that occurs during masturbation will ease or speed up menstrual periods. “The contractions that occur with orgasm can contribute to the body so you get things out more quickly,” says sex educator Serah Deysach.
3. Routine self pleasure
Even though you’re menstruating, it doesn’t mean you’re absent from self-care activities as well as self-pleasure. Masturbation can be done in between leisure time. Believe it or not, you can feel sexier afterwards.
“Sexy is a state, and you can definitely use the transformative space of menstruation to feel sexier,” says Howard.
4. Release stress
Peak pleasure or orgasm will help you release stress. Sometimes menstruation causes mood swings, makes you irritable over a condition, not to mention the added pressure during the pandemic. Moreover, masturbation is a relatively safe sexual activity because it is done alone.
5. Sleep better
For some women, menstruation makes it difficult to sleep and even if you can sleep, it is usually not sound. The pain mixed with bloating is indeed the culprit. But no need to worry because masturbation can save your sleep session.
“Sex can be tiring but orgasms can also cause drowsiness,” says sexologist Emily Morse PopSugar.
The release of endorphins can help the body relax and sleep better. Masturbation may be a better solution than swallowing painkillers.
