Jakarta: Hypertension or high blood pressure is a risk factor for damage to important organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys, eyes, large blood vessels (aorta) and peripheral blood vessels. There are several ways that can be done to treat hypertension such as by changing lifestyle and consumption of certain drugs. However, can this make hypertension heal?
“Once hypertension, there will be hypertension for life. So hypertension is not a disease that can be cured, but it can be controlled, ”said dr. Erwinanto, Sp.JP (K), FIHA, Deputy Chairman 1 of the Indonesian Hypertension Doctors Association (PERHI) in the “Know Your Number” World Hypertension Day Media Briefing on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.
He added that many people think that when they have hypertension, then their blood pressure drops, it is considered that they are cured. “That actually means that the hypertension is under control and once he does not take medication, his blood pressure will rise again,” said dr. Erwin.
“Many people may feel afraid that they have to continue taking drugs for their hypertension. But actually the drug can be adjusted according to blood pressure and the drug is not poison, so there is no need to worry, “said dr. Erwin.
According to dr. Erwin, currently the prevalence rate of hypertension is always increasing because it cannot be cured and people who experience hypertension are always increasing. “Existing hypertension cases can’t be deleted, and new cases are always increasing. So maybe it can’t be reduced so that it will always increase or at least be stable, ”he explained.
“Even though hypertension cannot be cured, several interventions can be made so that blood pressure can be controlled. One of them is by maintaining a diet. Try to choose foods that are low in salt. As low as we can do, “said dr. Erwin.
Then, according to dr. Erwin also should not eat excessively sweet foods and try to eat more vegetables and fruits and limit fat intake. “Physical activity is also necessary, if it is not normal to start with light exercise movements,” he concluded.
