Solopos.com, JAKARTA–If consumed in excess, energy drinks can have a negative impact on health. There have been at least two cases of heart failure, one ending in death, as a result of this habit.
A 21-year-old man in England is an example of what can happen to the body when this energy drink is consumed excessively on a daily basis. In very rare cases, it can even be fatal, such as the case of John Reynolds, a 41-year-old man from California, who died of a heart attack as a result of his energy drinking habits.
In the case of the British student, he experienced shortness of breath and lost weight drastically. The medical staff even had time to consider whether he should immediately perform an organ transplant.

How can energy drinks trigger heart failure? Check out the reviews. Reported in the journal BMJ Case Reports, the man was hospitalized with symptoms of difficulty breathing and weight loss that worsened for four months. He also experiences occasional digestive problems, tremors, and a racing heart.
The man was later diagnosed with heart and kidney failure after undergoing various tests. This means that his body is no longer able to pump blood and filter urine properly so an organ transplant is needed to overcome it.
The man admitted that he was accustomed to consuming energy drinks from 500 milliliter cans for two years. One can of it can contain up to 160 milligrams of caffeine.
“This case further clarifies the potential for cardiovascular problems from energy drinks to people at risk,” wrote the team of doctors as quoted from Live Science and detikcom, Monday (19/5/2021).
