Can Eating Nuts Make Weight Gain?

Nuts are known to have a high fat content.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Nuts are known as a nutritious snack and have a variety of health benefits. For example, several studies reveal that peanut can reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease, as well as lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

On the other hand, nuts are known to have a high fat content. Therefore, some people worry that eating nuts can actually trigger weight gain.

To find out the answer, a group of researchers conducted a study published in Obesity Reviews. This study aims to find out whether nuts contribute to weight gain.

From this study, researchers concluded that nuts are actually associated with a lower incidence of obesity or weight gain. In addition, higher nut intake also appears to be associated with weight loss and body fat loss.

A 2010 study also showed that nuts were included in a “cardioprotective diet”. This dietary arrangement is designed to improve cholesterol levels and blood pressure. In general, the foods in this diet have a high fiber content.

Therefore, there is no need to worry if you want to eat nuts. Nuts may have a high fat content. However, the type of fat that dominates in nuts is unsaturated fat.

In addition, nuts are also known to be rich in protein. This makes nuts a good choice to meet protein needs, especially for people who follow a vegetarian and vegan diet.

Healthspan’s head of nutrition, Rob Hobson, added that nuts are known to have a high mineral content. Some examples of minerals found in nuts are zinc, magnesium, and iron.

Hobs also agrees that the consumption of nuts does not cause weight gain directly. However, Hobson cautions that nuts are consumed in moderation to complement a healthy daily diet.

“If you consciously eat large amounts of nuts each day along with your usual diet, which exceeds your caloric needs, then you are likely to continue to gain weight,” Hobson said. Fit and Well, Tuesday (12/10).

Hobson says eating nuts or other healthy foods doesn’t really help much if it’s not accompanied by a good diet. Therefore, if you want to lose weight, consumption of nuts or other healthy foods also needs to be accompanied by a diet that is low in sugar, calories as needed, and far from unhealthy fats.
