SUKABUMIUPDATE.com – Group immunity is one method that is believed to break the chain of transmission of the Covid-19 corona virus.
With herd immunity, the spread of infection will be more widespread so that residents are expected to have immunity to the virus.
Chairman of the National Immunization Expert Advisory Committee or ITAGI Prof. Dr. dr Sri Rezeki Hadinegoro Sp.A. (K) said that it could be done that way. However, the risks faced can also get worse.
“Do you have to get a vaccine? We can create herd immunity. We will ignore it, so that many people will be infected with their own immune system. But if we ignore it and our people are not disciplined (health protocols), this is the problem,” Sri said in the socialization webinar on ‘Vaccines for the Country. ‘, Saturday (31/10/2020), quoted from Suara.com.
Doctor Sri explained, if many people are not yet strong, the virus transmission will continue to occur.
“Immune can be obtained because (having been exposed to) a disease can be due to vaccination. Why is there a person not immunizing but not getting sick? This is because of herd immunity, many of the environment is immune. So he is also protected,” he explained.
Other countries in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia and Thailand, have begun to experience a decline in Covid-19 cases because their people are considered disciplined in implementing health protocols, Sri continued.
However, the obstacle that occurs in Indonesia is that if you allow individual immunity to develop on their own without a vaccine, it can cause problems in health services.
“Should we wait for everyone to get sick first? If possible, only self-isolation at the hospital is fine. But if you have to use the ICU, the ventilator, the hospital becomes full, the doctor is overwhelmed and sick, what do you want?” Sri said.
“If we allow it, maybe two years of herd immunity can be achieved, but it can’t. We have the technology to make vaccines,” he added.
He stated that vaccines are not everything to deal with viral outbreaks. The most important thing, according to him, is that the Covid-19 pandemic will finish immediately with discipline in carrying out health protocols.
“In order for the pandemic to end quickly, the health protocol must be disciplined. It must be used and added later with vaccines so that we have more immunity. We can’t wait for all of us to get sick. Vaccines are not everything,” he said.
