The following is the explanation, as reported Healthline:

1. Suppress hunger

Chewing gum is believed to suppress hunger, making us feel fuller.

So that in the end, we don’t feel hungry too easily for certain foods, especially snacks.

A study on eating behavior published in February 2018 in Frontiers in Psychology sheds light on this.

Chewing gum is said to suppress hunger after 10 hours of fasting, as effectively as drinking high drinks calories.

Another study published in March 2015 asked participants to chew sugarless gum for 30 minutes after eating.

The chewing gum participants then reported feeling fuller than those who didn’t, and this effect was felt at least five minutes after starting chewing.

However, chewing gum may not be an effective way to reduce hunger or food intake for everyone.

In addition, research shows that chewing gum can reduce the desire to eat fruit, which may decrease the overall quality of the diet.

2. Helps eat fewer calories

Some people like to chew gum between meals because they believe it can help to consume fewer calories throughout the day.

They generally hope that this habit can help them lose weight.

A study published in the journal Appetite in July 2018 revealed the answer to this.

Study participants who chewed gum between breakfast and lunch were not only slightly hungry at that time.

They also ate about 68 calories less than those who didn’t chew gum.

In another study, chewing gum after meals was said to improve diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), which is the number of calories burned through digestion.

However, the amount of extra calories burned is actually very small.

Not only that, eating the same foods but slowly and not in a hurry is even more effective at increasing DIT than chewing gum.

Additionally, some claim, chewing gum can help shape the face by tightening the muscles.
