JAKARTA (RIAUPOS.CO) – Samsung doesn’t seem satisfied with its folding smartphone. Having been a pioneer in this category for the last few years, Samsung is still coming up with new ideas for foldable smartphones. At CES 2023, for example, Samsung Display showed off a new prototype screen and hinge that rotates 360 degrees.
With the screen name ‘Flex In & Out’ this will allow the user to fold the screen both in and out. The newly showcased technology implies that the hinge will have a completely different design to the current one. As per reports, the folds created by such screens will be smoother compared to current folding screen technology.
Reported from TheVerge, the hinge design, also referred to as the ‘waterdrop hinge’, will allow the screen to form a looser shape when folded inwards. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time that Samsung has unveiled a ‘Flex In & Out’ screen at an event.
The company previously showcased a similar screen in Korea in 2021. Where the new screen can be folded in and out, the old screen can only be folded like an “S” with segments. The new 360-degree foldable screen could make its way into the next iteration of the Galaxy Fold device, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is expected to launch later this year alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The incorporation of a new hinge also means that the fold will be smoother compared to the Galaxy Z Fold. 4.
With Samsung showing off its latest breakthrough, this will clearly be a trigger for other brands to participate in pouring out their innovations. However, whether Samsung will remain the champion in this segment remains to be seen.
