Can AMD Really Replace Intel in Macs?

Since Apple decided to switch its Macs to Intel chips in 2005, a question has arisen: why Intel chips and not AMD? In fact, if this question arises today, it was not the case at the time: in 2005, nobody imagined a choice other than Intel. But for the past few years, AMD has managed to come back to the fore, and the close ties between Cupertino and the “other” Santa Clara company make Ryzen processors serious candidates for Macs.

However, in 2020, Apple computers are still exclusively equipped with Intel CPUs, even if the rumors are persistent. We will analyze the reason for these rumors, and the possible constraints for Apple.

Advanced Micro Devices

AMD is an American company older than Apple, founded in 1969. It has produced components since the early 1970s, but it is known mainly to the general public for two things: its processors and its graphics cards.

However, it entered the world of x86 (the Intel instruction set) through the back door, in the 80s: IBM forced its suppliers to have a second source of supply for the chips of the IBM PC and Intel had to allow AMD to sell (and produce) clones of its CPUs.
