Can AI Help Detect Breast Cancer? Ongoing Trial Finds Promising Results

An ongoing trial at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is exploring whether artificial intelligence (AI) can help radiologists review thousands of mammograms a year.

This trial helped find early-stage breast cancer for June — a medical assistant and participant in the trial — and she will now have surgery as a result.

Mammograms are low-level X-rays used in breast cancer screening to monitor and detect changes that are too small to see or feel.

According to the NHS, England’s National Health Service, they help save around 1,300 lives each year in England.

While the number of women attending routine breast screening, once invited, will increase in Scotland in the three years to 2022, the number of radiologists reviewing results will shrink.
