CAN-2025 (U17): Algeria loses to Egypt
The Algerian under-17 football team (U17) lost against its Egyptian counterpart 1-2 (half-time: 1-0), Thursday in Casablanca, in a match counting for the 2nd day of the Union tournament North African Football (UNAF) , which qualifies for the CAN-2025 African Cup of Nations in the region. The “Greens” opened the scoring shortly before the break, with a penalty converted by Charaf-Eddine Cherfaoui (45th). In the second half, the “Pharaohs” turned the tide, first equalizing with Mohamed Hamad (59th), before taking the advantage a few minutes later through Hamza Elsayed (66th).
After this result, Egypt temporarily joins Tunisia and Morocco at the top of the ranking with 3 points each, while Algeria is in fourth place with 0 points. This is the second defeat for the Algerian cadets, after the one conceded on Monday against Tunisia (1-0). The second obstacle in a series that seriously threatens the chance of qualification. More than ever with their backs against the wall, coach Aziz Lahoussine’s players will need a miracle to qualify for CAN-2025. Captain Mohamed Benhakim’s teammates will not be allowed to make any more mistakes against Libya next Sunday (8:00pm), then against Morocco on Saturday 23 November (6:00pm). The first two at the end of this small competition will represent the UNAF zone at CAN-2025.
Algeria has only two participations in the last stage of the CAN U17, as a host country, in the 2009 and 2023 editions, we remember.
