CAN 2023: Ivory Coast on the roof of Africa

Ivory Coast won the 34th African Cup of Nations this Sunday, February 11, 2024, defeating Nigeria by 2 goals to 1.

The journey of the Ivory Coast Elephants to CAN 2023 is a true odyssey. After being drafted among the best thirds thanks to a performance by Morocco, Ivory Coast had a faultless run until the final.

Senegal, Mali and today Nigeria, no team has escaped the fury of the resurrected elephant. Facing the Super Eagles of Nigeria, the Ivory Coast national team did not perform well.

After having taken their chances at the start of the match, the Ivorians fell behind in the 38th minute thanks to a goal from W. Troost Ekong on an aerial ball.
Stunned in their pride, they will provide the answer in the 62nd minute thanks to Franck Kessié on a whim. He will be followed in the 81st minute by Sébastien Haller who, with the tip of his shoe, pushes the ball into the back of the Nigerian net.

Despite repeated attacks, Jose Peseiro’s men were unable to come back to score.

The Elephants who put everyone on their commitment during the matches thus obtain a 3rd coronation after 1992 and 2015.
