In July 2019, Algeria won the African Cup of Nations in Egypt. A competition which should have taken place initially in Cameroon. But problems related to insecurity or delays in the work convinced CAF to withdraw the organization of the CAN in Cameroon on November 30, 2018. However, CAF President Ahmad Ahmad said “Support Cameroon, give Cameroon time, so that they can prepare a CAN well”. And he has kept his promise since Cameroon will be the host country for the 2021 edition. A tournament which will be organized during the winter as announced by CAF on its official site.
“The Organizing Committee for the Total Cameroon 2021 African Cup of Nations met today, Wednesday January 15, 2020, at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé. On the agenda of this meeting: the organization of the African Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 (…) The main point on the agenda, was the review of the period of the competition on demand of the Cameroonian side. Indeed, faced with the unfavorable climatic conditions during the period initially fixed, Cocan wished to re-examine it. After having heard the various arguments expressed, in particular those of the meteorological officials of Cameroon, and the representatives of coaches and players, the Organizing Committee of the CAN which received the mandate from the CAF Executive Committee to decide, acceded favorably to this request. A detailed report will be presented to the members of the Executive Committee at the next meeting scheduled for February 6, 2020. Consequently, for the 2021 edition, the Total Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Cameroon, from January 9 to February 6, 2021. In in close collaboration with Cocan, CAF will set up a monitoring committee to carry out the preparations for this important competition. ”
