Axon announced that the Campbell Police Department in California has received a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for beyond-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations as part of its Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program. This authorization is the first of its kind to include night operations and allows the Campbell Police Department to fly missions using Dedrone by Axon DedroneBeyond technology without visual observers. Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs are transforming the way emergencies are managed by creating real-time situational awareness that improves response times and safety. With DFR, police can deploy drones as soon as a 911 call comes in, giving them a clear picture of the situation before officers arrive. Until now, the use of drones at night has been limited due to visibility issues, preventing the full potential of DFR programs after dark.
Since the DFR program began in 2022, the Campbell Police Department has used a human visual observer with a time of day exemption for BVLOS operations. This has enabled the agency to obtain critical information from the air that helps it deploy its resources more effectively and improve safety. With the FAA’s recent Part 91.113(b) approval, the Campbell Police Department can now deploy the DedroneBeyond ground-based detection and avoidance system both day and night, eliminating the need for human observers and the use of drones around the clock is made possible. As a virtual visual observer, DedroneBeyond works with a remote pilot from a nearby control center, allowing the drones to deploy quickly, climb to an approved altitude of up to 400 feet and take the most efficient route to incidents at any time of day and in any weather fly. AI-driven sensor fusion technology detects and avoids manned aircraft without false alarms interrupting the mission. Once on site, the drone can either land or monitor from a safe and approved altitude. The Campbell Police Department’s DFR program integrates advanced technologies from leading industry partners, including Dedrone by Axon, Axon Air Remote powered by DroneSense and MatrixSpace. This collaboration provides remote drone operators with a unified view of airspace, deconfection and mission control.
