Thinking about the well-being of the community during these Fiestas Patrias, the police are patrolling different areas to ensure that people who decide to fly a kite do not do so with the dangerous “cured thread,” the use and distribution of which is punishable by law. Not in vain, the region already has a child who was a victim of this dangerous element when he was with his father, unexpectedly finding this thread in his path.
This is how officers from the First Rancagua Police Station are developing the preventive campaign, “Safe Kite”, giving recommendations to the residents of the western sector to avoid accidents and enjoy these dates. September has begun and some traditions such as flying a kite are reappearing. For this reason, this preventive campaign, “Say no to cured thread”, has also been carried out in the commune of Mostazal, giving recommendations to parents and children to not use it and prevent accidents.
It is important to remember that competition thread is regulated – not prohibited like glass thread – and that it must be used in specific places, by people of legal age and who are registered in a kite club. Children should only use cotton thread. When flying kites, it should be done in open places and not near public lighting, high or medium voltage towers and installations such as substations.
In Chile, anyone who manufactures, collects or sells cured thread will be punished with a minimum prison sentence (61 to 540 days) and a fine of 100 to 500 UTM. Anyone who uses or facilitates the use of cured thread will be punished with a fine of two to 50 UTM.
HEALTH JOINS THE CALL
“Cured thread is a practice that is punishable by law, it is prohibited. It is important to remind citizens that they should not use it, that if they know of any place where cured thread is sold or produced, they can file complaints, given that intersectoral work is done with the municipalities and Carabineros and us as well, given that it can affect people’s health,” said Dr. Carolina Torres Pinto, regional minister of Health.
The head of the health portfolio added that “unfortunately we have had a case of a minor who was affected by this practice and we have had historically even deaths in the country due to the use of cured thread, so the call is that these parties be spaces where we can celebrate and have a good time, therefore, it should not be used, since the health of the population is exposed and can even lead to death.”
It is worth mentioning that the cured thread is kite thread to which ground glass or quartz has been added, in order to be able to cut the threads of other kites. This works like a knife, being able to cut not only the thread of other kites, but it can also produce superficial cuts in the skin, although it can also generate deep cuts that compromise muscles, blood vessels or others, and can even cause death.
