According to reports, the total cost of the school list exceeds 4,000 pesos, not including the backpack and some support books.
Prices for simple notebooks have increased significantly, going from 14.50 pesos to 25.00 pesos in just a couple of weeks. Some stationery stores offer deals; however, there are parents who are struggling because they have two or three children.
In addition, the cost of uniforms ranges from 500 to 1,500 pesos, depending on the school institution. This is in addition to school fees, which means that parents pay approximately 4,500 pesos for their children to start the school year, and then come the daily lunches and other expenses that arise throughout the year.
The Federal Consumer Protection Agency has called on retailers not to raise prices and to respect their promotions. It also asks consumers to report any abuse.
As the start of the school year approaches, purchases are expected to increase, which will benefit local businesses, but parents will be forced to pay out large amounts, even going into debt, to continue their children’s studies.
