Camille Napoleon: The ‘Angel’ Providing Shelter for Immigrants in New York

Camille Napoleon is an ‘angel’ to dozens of immigrants recently arrived in New York.

The woman of Hispanic origin has housed more than 40 people in the last year in her small apartment in Manhattan.

With no interest other than helping people in need, Camille lends a hand so they have a place to sleep while they find their own way in the Big Apple.

For the beneficiaries, “Mommy” as Camille is affectionately called, is an angel in the midst of so many complications that they suffer from making their way in the Country.

“Mommy is an angel that God gave us here. Of course (which is part of my life) and wherever I am, she will be,” said Martín, a 30-year-old Venezuelan who has been living for a month with three other people in Napoleon’s apartment.

They all share space in a small room and a room.

The immigrants help “mami” by cleaning the apartment and sharing the housework.

The woman points out that she began to accept immigrants in her own home after participating as support staff to receive them at the Port Authority bus terminal.

He added that he does it with no interest other than helping, because that’s how his father taught him.

“Since I was 18 years old, my dad said that if you are not helping human beings, you are not living a real life,” he said.

“At first it was a little difficult because you are bringing people you don’t know, who don’t know their lifestyle,” he said.

With no formal support from New York City, Camille manages to house people by receiving help from neighbors and organizations.

“Asking for help from my neighbors, from local organizations that have always helped, clothing donations, a lot of patience, a lot of prayer,” he explained.

Ultimately, what she wants is for people to have help to establish themselves in the City.

The only thing he asks in return is that they fill his heart with grandchildren.

“That everyone is standing well, in their homes, at work, happy, content, that they fill my home and my heart with grandchildren and live life as it should be because they are already mine,” he concluded.
