Camilla Crown controversy at the coronation of King Charles makes India angry

London

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom announced the coronation Raja Charles III will take place on May 6, 2023. Not yet held, the event has already sparked controversy. The cause is the crown of Camilla Parker Bowles.

According to the will War Elizabeth II, Camilla is entitled to the title of “queen consort” or empress if Charles ascends the throne as king of England. With the Queen’s blessing, Camilla also inherited a number of jewelry collections.

With 2,800 diamonds adorning it, this crown includes a highly prized family heirloom. However, its true luxury comes from the Koh-i-Noor, one of the largest cut diamonds in the world, which adorns the crown’s head.

The exact price of this 105-carat diamond is not known. However, one estimate says the diamond’s value could reach £ 120 million or around Rp 2 trillion!

The Koh-i-Noor diamond that adorns the crown comes from the British Royal collection which has been used for generations by queens consortincluding Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII.

Originally from India, the diamond became a symbol of power during the heyday of the Mughal Empire (16-19 centuries). The British Empire managed to claim the Koh-i-Noor diamond through Queen Victoria after the end of the Anglo-Sikh war.

In 1850, the last Sikh emperor, Duleep Singh, then just 10 years old, gave the diamond to Queen Victoria as a ‘gift’. However, Duleep is said to have done so by force to free his mother from British troops.

There have been many movements that forced the British to return the diamonds to India. And when Camila plans to wear it to the coronation, India is even more furious.

The party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the plan. “The coronation of Camilla (as queen consort) with the Koh-i-Noor diamond crown brings back bad memories of the colonial era, “said a spokesperson.

He added, most Indians have begun to forget this dark history. “Nearly five or six generations in India have suffered for five centuries of colonial rule,” she said.

They hope the crown will be absent from the coronation ceremony of King Charles III and his wife. To date, Buckingham Palace has been reluctant to comment on the Indian government’s request.
