“Few Cameroonians will recognize him but his fate is so symbolic of the dysfunction of our system. Jean-Pierre Mbiaga passed away yesterday (09/13/2023), at the age of 58. He was co-accused of Amadou Vamoulke, former Director General of CRTV, in an audit file of which he knew nothing.
While he had settled in Canada with his family, he was summoned to the TCS (Special Criminal Court) for a hearing.
Jean-Pierre Mbiaga could have not come but he had peace of mind. Sure of his innocence, he takes a return plane ticket to come and respond to a summons that had been sent to him by WhatsApp.
He is auditioned once; the second time, he will be placed under arrest warrant without any link being established between his office and the problematic CRTV audit.
He spent more than 5 years trying to convince our justice system that there was undoubtedly an error somewhere. His firm carried out the DSF (Statistical and Tax Declaration) of the CRTV each year and never produced an audit on the CRTV.
Amadou Vamoulke may confirm the facts, but nothing has happened. 5 years of pre-trial detention, from which he derived no hatred, each time relying on God, the master of clocks.
I had the immense privilege of sharing his room at Kondengui prison, room 5 of district 1. I was sad to see him suffer from a prostate. I had the honor of hearing him talk about taxation and the economy. I had fun watching him play basketball or ludo.
Jean-Pierre Mbiaga was called the Canadian or simply Prof, because he taught economics. He often told me in a premonitory way: “God sent you here to come and testify.”
Professor, I had to testify that you left without hatred, inhabited by a rare optimism in the face of suffering.
How could you not wish that God, whom you constantly invoked, would welcome you into his Kingdom. You will finally find peace there”
