Goalkeeper Andre Onana was removed from the squad Cameroon national team from World Cup 2022 ahead of Serbia for disciplinary reasons on Monday (11/28).
Initially, Andre Onana was “knocked out” from the Cameroon-Serbia team only in the second match of Group G of the World Cup at Al Janoub Stadium.
The Inter goalkeeper was not included in the squad list because he refused to follow coach Rigobert Song’s instructions.
Quoted from a tweet by senior journalist Fabrizio Romano, Onana has refused orders from Rigobert Song regarding a goalkeeper’s style of play.
In this loading, Onana insists on defending in a traditional goalkeeper style. Not wanting to have any problems ahead of the crucial Les Lions Indomptables game, Song struck off Onana.
Andre Onana’s position as Cameroon’s main goalkeeper against Serbia was replaced by Devis Epassy.
“Andre Onana has been excluded from the Cameroon squad. The reason was the discussions with the coach because he insisted on a different, more ‘traditional’ style of goalkeeping,” said Romano.
“Onana had no intention of changing his style, the situation was tense and so he was sent off,” added Romano.
Romano’s tweets didn’t stop there. Andre Onana was not only absent in the Cameroon-Serbia match, but he was also removed from the 2022 World Cup squad.
This way the 26-year-old goalkeeper will not play for Cameroon in the remaining matches of the 2022 World Cup.
“Andre Onana has decided to leave [skuad] permanently and he won’t come back, [sudah] confirmed,” Romano said.
