And, as always, K-pop did it first.
Starting today (August 18), Cameo will offer 10-minute calls with celebrities through a service they call “Cameo Live(opens in a new tab)“, which honestly seems like too much time to spend with a celebrity. (Never meet your heroes.)
With this new Live feature, you can choose to chat one-on-one or invite up to nine friends to join you. No information was available on the average price of these sessions, but the company noted that “talent is firmly on board as the longer lead time and greater call turnout…create more personal relationships with fans than ever.” previously “.
Cameo has already tried this concept twice: first by offering Zoom-call Cameos(opens in a new tab) in June 2020, then moving the service to their app with Cameo Calls(opens in a new tab) up to 15 minutes. But in its announcement today, the company called Cameo Calls (which will be phased out) a “two-minute meet-and-greet product.”
This implies that Cameo Call’s original running time of 15 minutes was… 13 minutes too long.
Industry precedent (and common sense) confirms that even five awkward minutes can feel like an eternity. The K-Pop industry, which received fan calls since March 2020(opens in a new tab), only allows about 90 seconds per party member. To attend, fans purchase albums from approved merchants, with each album counting as a single entry into a lottery for a limited number of fan call-in slots.
Cameo Live is not such a gamble; you are almost guaranteed to have a call with your favorite reality star for a fee. But maybe keep this call to five minutes quick and cute.
