With one by one fans from all over the world arriving in Qatar, the risk of catching the camel flu cannot be ruled out. Football fans watching the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are warned to always be careful not to catch the camel flu.
Camel flu or Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus. The disease is often spread through close contact with an infected person.
The England team’s defeat in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup has also made the country’s health authorities wary of those returning home with symptoms of a respiratory infection.
reported Metro UK, the UK Health Security Agency (HSA) has urged doctors to be alert to people with fever and difficulty breathing. While both are caused by coronaviruses, MERS is far deadlier than COVID-19
“Physicians and public health teams should be particularly alert to the possibility of MERS in travelers returning from the World Cup,” the HSA statement read.
“The risk of infection in UK residents is very low, but may be higher in those exposed to certain risk factors in the region, such as camels.”
MERS disease can be contracted from close contact with camels or from consuming unpasteurized camel milk products. They also warned of the risk of person-to-person transmission, and two cases were reported in Qatar this year.
