SC Cambuur fears bankruptcy, after the KNVB decided on Friday that the Leeuwarders will not be promoted. The club, which led with a big lead in the Kitchen Champion Division, was already financially geared to Eredivisie football in the coming season.
“Do I fear the survival of Cambuur? Yes,” general Gerard van den Belt said on Sunday NOS. “If we actually remain in the Kitchen Champion Division, we will go under 1.5 million euros under water. And the corona crisis is added to this, which we all suffer from.”
Cambuur, which is busy building a new stadium, already invested heavily in players last summer with the hope of promotion. A new financial injection followed in the winter break.
“We were already eight points ahead at the time,” said Van de Belt. “We have invested again to strengthen the weaknesses in the team, which would make the championship even more secure. At the current stand of the Kitchen Champion Division, which is now regarded as the final score, Cambuur’s lead is even greater. The gap with number three FC Volendam is eleven points. In the vote of the clubs last Friday, sixteen clubs were for the promotion of Cambuur (and also De Graafschap), nine against and nine neutral. However, the KNVB decided that Cambuur will not be awarded a doctorate.
“As far as we are concerned, that is an insane choice,” said Van den Belt. “KNVB director Eric Gudde said that a lot could have happened in the last rounds.
