As expected, Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling party in Cambodia has claimed victory in parliamentary elections. The elections are considered a farce. The main opposition parties have been banned by the government.

Hun Sen has been in power for 38 years, making him Asia’s longest-serving prime minister. The 70-year-old leader recently suggested that he will hand over power to his eldest son. Their Manet (45) may be appointed as the new prime minister within a month.

Six hours after the polls closed, the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) spoke of a huge victory for the incumbent ruling party. According to the unofficial result, the CPP will receive 120 of the 125 seats in the House of Commons. The royal family Funcinpec gets the other five seats.

Russian observers

The European Union refused to send observers to the elections in the Southeast Asian country of 16 million. According to the West, the requirements for a fair vote have not been met. However, international observers from Russia and China, allies of the Cambodian prime minister, were present.

Over the past decade, Hun Sen has severely curtailed press freedom and silenced opponents of the regime. Earlier this year, opposition leader Kem Sokha was sentenced to 27 years in house arrest. He would have been guilty of high treason.
