Cambodian Man Dies After Falling Into Enclosure of 40 Crocodiles

PHNOM PENH, KOMPAS.com – A man in Cambodia died after falling into an enclosure containing around 40 crocodiles on Friday (26/5/2023).

The incident began when the 72-year-old man tried to get a crocodile out of its enclosure after it laid eggs there.

Suddenly the crocodile grabbed the stick the man was using and pulled him into the cage.

A swarm of crocodiles then attacked him, tore his body to pieces, and bloodied the concrete cage conditions at the farm in Siem Reap.

“As he chased a crocodile out of the cage (because it was) laying eggs, the crocodile attacked the stick, causing it to fall into the cage,” Mey Savry, Siem Reap commune police chief, told AFP.

Then, he said, another crocodile pounced on him and beat him to death.

He added that the man’s remains were covered in crocodile bite marks.

Mey Savry said one of the man’s arms was bitten off and swallowed by a crocodile.

This is not the first time news of residents dying after entering crocodile cages has come from Cambodia.

In 2019, a two-year-old girl was killed and eaten by a crocodile when she roamed her family’s reptile farm in the same village.
