Cambodia rejects Candlelight Party’s application to participate in general election

(PLO)- The National Election Commission of Cambodia (NEC) has rejected the Candlelight Party’s application to participate in the general election because it did not have enough documents as prescribed.

The National Election Commission of Cambodia (NEC) has rejected the Candlelight party’s application to participate in the general election. The move comes after the party failed to meet the conditions of Cambodia’s election law, according to the newspaper Khmer Times.

According to a decision signed by NEC President Prach Chan, the Candlelight Party was not accepted to participate in the general election because of the lack of documents.

The NEC’s decision states that as of May 8, 2023, the NEC has received a total of 20 applications from political parties. By law, the NEC has 7 days to review the documents and the parties have 5 days to add and correct missing documents.

The NEC said that 15/20 parties had submitted all the required documents with the correct information, so the NEC approved the 15 parties’ applications to participate in the general election. At the same time, 5 parties were asked to edit and complete the profile.

The NEC said that the remaining four out of five parties have added their documents and been approved. Because the Candlelight party did not add enough documents, the NEC rejected its application to participate in the general election.

Cambodia is scheduled to hold a general election to elect a 125-seat parliament on July 23. According to Khmer Times, More than 9.7 million Cambodian voters have registered to vote.

In the 2018 general election, Cambodia had 20 political parties participating in the election. In that election, the Cambodian People’s Party won all 125 seats in the National Assembly.
