Cambodia’s Rice Export Milestones in 2024
Senior Editor: Dr. Vann, cambodia’s rice exports reached $491 million in 2024, a significant achievement. What do you think drove this success?
Dr. Sopheak Vann: Thank you for having me. The success of Cambodia’s rice exports in 2024 can be attributed to several factors. First, the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) has been instrumental in promoting high-quality rice varieties, notably fragrant rice, which accounts for over 76% of exports. This focus on premium products has helped Cambodia carve out a niche in the global market. Additionally, the diversification of export markets to 68 countries has reduced reliance on any single market, ensuring stability and growth.
The role of China in Cambodia’s Rice Exports
Senior Editor: China is a major buyer of Cambodian rice, purchasing 117,925 tonnes in 2024. How has this partnership evolved, and why is China such a critical market?
Dr. Sopheak Vann: China has been a strategic partner for Cambodia’s agricultural sector for years. The strong trade ties between the two nations have been bolstered by Cambodia’s ability to meet china’s demand for high-quality rice, especially fragrant rice. China’s growing middle class has shown a preference for premium rice varieties, and Cambodia has capitalized on this trend. moreover, the geographical proximity and favorable trade agreements have made China a natural and reliable market for Cambodian rice.
