Cambio prices up again; SRD 40 for US dollars and euros not impossible

The cambio prices in Suriname have risen again to an unprecedented height. According to several economists, the increase is because the demand for foreign currency is still greater than the supply. They claim that an exchange rate above SRD 40 for the US dollar and euro is not impossible.

At the cambios, the US dollar is today bought between SRD 31.65 and 31.75 and sold between SRD 32.10 and 32.25. To buy US $ 10,000 and more, a higher rate is used.

Euro is bought between SRD 32.50 and 32.60 and sold between SRD 32.80 and 33. When purchasing 10,000 euros and more, a higher exchange rate is used, just like with the US dollar.

The book rate at the Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS) for the US dollar on Friday was SRD 31,867 for buying and SRD 32,245 for selling. The euro purchase was set at SRD 32,675 and sales at SRD 34,001.

In the 2020 elections, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi had promised that the VHP would come up with a number of measures to stabilize the exchange rate within two years and bring it back below SRD 7 for the US dollar. Now, almost three years later, the price has not fallen, but has risen further.

Vice-president Ronnie Brunswijk announced at the beginning of November last year that at a rate of SRD 30, he believes it is time for the government to pack. Now more than two months later he is silent about this in all languages.
